Classmate's Blogs

Whats on the agenda for this week?  To find out what my classmates are writing about. I think this is a positive way on learning how to blog. This experience is a first for me, so going through some of my peer’s work has definitely helped.
Being interested in entertainment seems to be a popular topic in the blogger world of our public relations research class. I was looking at Lindsay's Blog and her topic caught my attention. I remember in class she mentioned how she had an internship with NBC  this past summer, so I figured it was only natural she picked a topic relating to NBC. I liked the way she opened her blog with getting the reader involved. She followed the right format in talking about ethics, and picked a topic that intrigues the reader by asking the questions she did in the beginning. The Olympics is a major event that everyone knows about, so it serves as an appropriate topic to write about. The type of opening that she used is something that I will definitely consider using in the future.
As I scrolled down the blogs, I came across Laura's Blog. The two of us have had multiple public relations courses together, so I figured I would probably be interested in something that she had to say. It turns out I was right! As a read through this blog post, I though it was ironic that we both used the example of the ever popular almost five foot (with the poof) Snooki! It is almost inevitable that the reality show Jersey Shore is brought up in college students' blogs. It  started out as just a reality show, but has really blown up into so much more. There are people that aspire to be like these characters on the show, and  truly love to GTL. I just thought it was interesting the different examples and view points that we both took from her, and how we were able to relate it to something we learned in class.

Results? You Can See Them With Some Research!

What is the point of doing research? Why do we spend so much time interview people, creating focus groups, and reading till our eyes fall out? I’ll tell you… it is to get results! The reason why we research to begin is to try and figure something out.  We want to be able to see a difference from start to finish.
In order to show results in an orderly fashion, we use research reports. These reports contain detailed information about the study at hand, specialized terms and a lot of data. It is important in these reports that we do not give too many statistics and data, because it will come off as confusing.
For example, when I think about results, the first image that comes to mind are the proactive commercials. Although a lot of the times I do get sick of them because they can get cheesy, in reality, I still use the product myself. The reason being,  is because this product is well promoted because almost every commercial is celebrity endorsed, and who wouldn’t want to listen to the adorable Justin Bieber?
Something that stands out about pro active is the fact that they not only have the celebrity face, but they have the research as well. They give proven facts in there advertisements and then also give the visual aids necessary to convince people. They show distinct differences in the person’s skin from before to after. Sure there is always going to be the comment made of “ well if that picture must have been  photo shopped”. But you can check out the proactive site like I did. There are tons of people who posted pictures like this showing the difference of there skin and then sharing their personal stories. I don’t think people would photo shop pictures and then create an entire life story just to be on a website. But there are some crazy people out there…..

Point being, the dermatologists that worked on the product proactive did numerous amounts of experiments and research, to get the final results that they deserved. Although the research may take a lot of time, in the end the results are hopefully worth it!

Research Ethics in the Media

Welcome back to my blog, this week we are going to talk about ethics.

Ethics in research is a topic that sometimes goes over peoples’ heads. Most people think of research as just asking questions and reporting the results. This is a very basic definition of research, but when it comes down to working with actual people, the ethics behind it can become very touchy. Our book discusses some examples of studies that have been conducted, which would question the ethics behind it. One that caught my eye was research dealing with hidden cameras. When reading the example, it talked about how one study used hidden cameras to better understand customer behavior. Which is fine, they are trying to observe people in their environment. What is not fine, and where the line of ethics gets crossed, is when the footage caught on tape is sold online somewhere. Then those people that are caught on tape are at risk. And this is something they did not sign up for.

I feel like hidden cameras are something that makes reality television what it is today. This is what reality television basically is. We throw a bunch of people in a house and film them to see what happens. But the difference is, the people signed up for this, so it is ok that the footage is all over the internet and television.

On Sunday night six letters consumed everyone’s entertainment for the night. What were these letters? MTV VMA. Two out of these six letters are the same word. Video. The footage caught on tape, whether it be reality, music, or a simply a home video, is something that all of us are guilty of watching in one way or another.

Half of the outrageous footage filmed on the epic Jersey Shore would not be caught if there wasn’t a camera plugged in somewhere. For example “the hottest guidette around” Snooki, last season had a very famous clip caught on footage. Snooks gets rocked . Some drunk idiot decided it was a bring idea to punch Snooki at the bar. As you can see in this video that you never actually see the face of the man that punched Snooki. The reason behind that has to do with the ethics that MTV has, on privacy, there is certain paperwork that is behind the cameras. There are some people that 100 % want their drunken mistakes to be all over television so they feel like they are awesome and got there 15 minutes of fame!. But although this man was an idiot, and was arrested, he did have the smarts to agree to not have this footage of his face air.ed.

How many situations can you think of where similar SITUATIONS takes place? And yes, that was a poke and the infamous Mike. The. Situation.

That’s all for now folks. See ya next week!

Lisa's Blog

Welcome to the first every blog entry by yours truly, Lisa Perez! At first trying to figure out the main theme for my blog was quite the struggle. Then I realized that the main point of a blog is to be able to talk about something that you have strong opinions about. As well as being able to keep people intrigued on what it is exactly that you are saying. Hope you are not bored yet!

Entertainment is something that is relevant to everyone. Whether it is radio, television, or fashion there is something our there that can entertain anyone. Throughout this blog I am going to focus on items such as the latest events going on in all aspects of entertainment. So many times people hear about events after they go on. What is the point of hearing about the aftermath, when you never get to experience it for yourself?
